Recycling in Brooklyn Center
Brooklyn Center is a member of the Hennepin Recycling Group (HRG), alongside the cities of Crystal and New Hope. The HRG, in collaboration with the City of Brooklyn Park, operates under a joint powers agreement to manage their recycling and waste management programs. The recycling administration office is located at Brooklyn Park Operations and Maintenance. The HRG provides recycling services to all single-family homes and apartment buildings with eight or fewer units. Larger apartment and multifamily buildings must arrange for recycling services through a private contractor.
Recycling Service Fee
Each residential household is charged a monthly utility fee to support the Recycling/Waste Management Program, which is collected through the utility bill. This fee funds curbside collection of recyclables, a yard waste drop-off site, special materials drop-off days, and public information and education activities. The fee is set by council or board action and may be adjusted as necessary based on costs and revenues.
Recycling Pickup
Recyclables are collected every other week on the same day as garbage pickup. In Brooklyn Center, garbage and recycling are typically picked up on Thursdays on the west side and Fridays on the east side. Residents can view a map to determine their specific pickup day.
Curbside Collection Cart
The program provides each household with a recycling cart available in three sizes: 35, 64, and 96 gallons. Damaged or lost carts will be replaced at no charge. To request an additional cart or a replacement, residents can call (763) 493-8006.
Disability Assistance
Residents who have difficulty bringing their cart to the curb due to a temporary or permanent disability can request walk-up service by calling (763) 493-8006.
Organics pickup in Brooklyn Center?
We are required to offer curbside organics recycling service, which is an opt-in program. State law mandates that haulers charge all residential customers for organics recycling services, regardless of participation.
Residents can also bring their organics to the Hennepin County drop-off center or the HRG drop-off at the Crystal Cove Aquatics Center for free disposal. Currently, collected organics are composted into nutrient-rich soil amendments. In the coming years, Hennepin County plans to build an anaerobic digestion facility on the west side of Brooklyn Park.
